There were a lot of clips left over from v.one. They along with new content were assembled into v.two, edited by Keiko, and premiered at the Season's Beatings tourney in Colombus, Ohio.
Here are the usual overdetailed explanations of my (tool-assisted) contributions.
This year the big collaboration was ComboVid.com DAMAGE exhibition v.one, with editing by Snoooootch. The idea was big damage over style. Problem with that is, it tends to not be stylish... Anyway, I had a few clips in this, all scripted with macrolua.
The name of the game is style. The material consists of quick combos with varied rapid attacks, and extended combos with varied components. The style exhibition was shown to the crowd on the last day of evo2k10 along with super fireball battle. Both videos were masterminded by Maj.
I only contributed one part, the touch-of-death at 5:48, from Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara. This is a beat-em-up, not a fighting game. But along with Punisher, Alien vs. Predator and others, it borrows from the mechanics of Capcom's fighting games. I chose this game because I had some experience with it and knew that it had a lot of untapped potential. (Check this out for a DDSoM combo video.)
Concepts such as attack startup and frame advantage, meatiness, knockdown and cancelability properties of attacks, juggle potential, and dizzy damage all play a role in determining if a sequence will or won't combo. These things are hard to test because of the inability to control to opponent and the lack of a combo meter, but tool-assistance helps. Besides giving complete control over time and execution, you can watch frame by frame to ensure the opponent never recovers. (The Zangief combo at 0:27, by Maj, also had to be done against the computer to exploit the glitch in SF2:WW where Vega is hit off the ground after a sweep.)
The fighter was chosen because he has the most combat options, including a very good uppercut. The character joins in after the end of the last stage so that he would be at the lowest level and have basic equipment. (Pressing start at the beginning briefly reveals his inventory.) Starting this way also means he has no name assigned. The gold color was chosen just to stand out. I could have done a four character beatdown but that wouldn't be very stylish.
So evo2k10, the biggest annual American fighting game tournament, has come and gone. I wasn't there, but part of me was. Over the past months I've contributed to sonichurricane's 2010 video projects, which were shown before the SSF4 finals: super fireball battle and style exhibition.
Instead of a combo video, the notion is for each opponent to exchange and negate projectiles (fireballs, preferably super ones) without hurting the other character. I don't have much experience making combos but since I have a very broad base of video game knowledge and experience with tool-assistance, I found this very appealing.
The concept apparently hasn't been tried before, and it was lucky for me to arrive at sonichurricane when I did with plenty of time before the deadline. I could contribute to something big without worrying about the grand scheme, and I'm grateful for the chance to participate. The idea was Maj's and the editing was handled by veteran rithli.
So here are my parts. I wasn't expecting so many of them to make the cut, but I guess it helps that rithli loves vsav. When you watch the video, look out for the amazing transitions, like at 1:12 and 1:22. (In the interests of editing, Maj's Guile-Morrigan CvS2 clip was cut but the sonic hurricane does eventually negate the second soul fist.)
1:12 Vampire Savior
Maj was trying to come up with something between Morrigan and Demitri and asked me to take a look. I settled on this clip featuring Morrigan and Jedah. (Demitri's cool with this. He got to appear elsewhere.)
Jedah's backslash move can eat fireballs (inspiration came from this match) and Morrigan's hail of missiles obliterates any projectiles. The projectile thrower typically eats the rest of the missiles, but Jedah can fly above safely with his Dark Force. The last blade is only a pixel from Morrigan's face.
